The Friends of St Leonard’s was created in September 1984. We want to see the church used and cherished. We have many members from the local area and many others who have lived or worked nearby and who continue to value it.
The Friends of St Leonard’s was established to:
We are a group of volunteers and we work to keep St. Leonard’s church open and in good condition for future generations. It is a centre for Christian worship and a place of peace for the people of our community. It is also a place of enjoyment with regular music concerts, exhibitions, school events, historic tours and art workshops. During our open season in the summer we open for tea and cakes on Sunday afternoons.
We have been entrusted with the care of the oldest building in Hertford, and over the years our fund-raising efforts have purchased a new organ, chairs, the lighting and sound systems, as well as the kitchen and toilet facilities that have made it much more useable. We have also funded conservation work on the paintings of Moses and Aaron and provided for the survey of the wall paintings.
The Friends of St Leonard’s promote interest in the church and raise funds to keep it in good order. We elect our own committee and control our own finances. However, we work in co-operation with the PCC who are ultimately responsible for the building.
