Friends of St. Leonard’s

Who Are We?

The Friends of St Leonard’s was created in September 1984. Its aims are to:

  • Promote wider interest in the ancient church of St Leonard’s, Bengeo
  • Assist the Parochial Church Council of Holy Trinity Church, Bengeo, in the continued preservation of St Leonard’s Church, and to
  • Provide for the enrichment and continued use of St Leonard’s Church.

We are a group of volunteers and we work to keep St. Leonard’s church open and in good condition for future generations. It is a centre for Christian worship and a place of peace for the people of our community. It is also a place of enjoyment with regular music concerts, exhibitions, school events, historic tours and art workshops. During our open season in the summer we open for tea and cakes on Sunday afternoons.

We have been entrusted with the care of the oldest building in Hertford, and over the years our fund-raising efforts have purchased a new organ, chairs, the lighting and sound systems, as well as the kitchen and toilet facilities that have made it much more useable. We have also funded conservation work on the paintings of Moses and Aaron and provided for the survey of the wall paintings.

Please join us in our work and become a Friend of this ancient church. The annual subscription is:
